A’s rookie Medina shines, but Bochy’s Texas Rangers extend Oakland’s losing streak

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:39:39 GMT

OAKLAND — A’s rookie Luis Medina, called up from the minors earlier in the day, was perfect through three innings and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth, but Rangers veteran Nathan Eovaldi was even better in handing Oakland its fifth straight loss on Thursday night. The A’s managed just three hits and struck out 13 times in a 4-0 loss to Texas in front of a crowd of 2,949, the third-smallest of the season at the Coliseum.Medina was making his second career start. He made his debut two weeks ago against the Angels and allowed seven earned runs in five innings. The 24-year-old right-hander fared much better against the Rangers, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter. The A’s still dropped to 3-19 at home and 8-31 overall because of another dominating outing by Eovaldi, who is a big reason manager Bruce Bochy’s Rangers are in first in the A.L. West.Eovaldi (5-2) set a career high with 12 strikeou...

Schmitt continues, Cobb keeps rolling as SF Giants top D-backs

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:39:39 GMT

After six weeks of play, in their 37th game, the Giants played their first road contest that didn’t involve a time change. An effect of this year’s balanced schedule, all but six of these first set of games have come against non-divisional opponents. That means their sluggish start, entering Thursday’s series opener in Arizona at 16-20, hasn’t sunken them in the NL West. Seven games separate all five teams, even the lowly Rockies. Facing the second-place Diamondbacks for the first time this year, the Giants kicked off the season series with a strong start.Alex Cobb claimed the National League ERA crown with 7⅓ shutout innings and rookie sensation Casey Schmitt reached new heights (and distance) as the Giants beat the D-backs, 6-2. Here are some observations:1. Continuing his electric entrance to the major leagues, the 24-year-old Schmitt hit his second homer in three games and collected four hits for his third consecutive multi-hit game to begin his career.His...
