SAN FRANCISCO – Mikatoa Scanlan was exhausted, spending the time in between plays huffing air with hands on hips. But with Archbishop Riordan needing a stop, the beefy 280-pound defensive tackle jumped in front of and intercepted a screen pass to end Archbishop Mitty’s potential game-tying drive late in the fourth quarter. Riordan’s offense scored the insurance touchdown two plays later to clinch the West Catholic Athletic League victory. In a game where Archbishop Riordan and Archbishop Mitty spent 48 minutes making play after play after play, trading touchdowns on Riordan’s senior day, it was only fitting that a Crusader senior was the one who clinched the San Francisco school’s 56-42 win. “Even though we gave up a lot of points in the first half, we still fought to the end of the game,” Scanlan said. California will soon be home to a task force dedicated to fentanyl overdose prevention. School districts will need to think through body shaming, and prepare policies on how to prevent it. And community colleges will be required to provide in-state tuition for some in Mexico, including low-income students that live less than 45 miles from California’s border. Those were among 100 new measures Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Friday, working through the last of a stack of 1,046 bills sent to his desk from the legislature dominated by his fellow Democrats. In his final day of bill signings Friday — the deadline was midnight Saturday — Newsom vetoed just two bills, for a total of 890 signed and 156 vetoed in 2023. That’s a slight uptick in rejecting proposed legislation that reflects both his concerns about the state’s finances in an uncertain economy, as well as his national political ambitions.“Newsom has been put in a position of serving as the leg...High school football: Serra rolls through Bellarmine, extends WCAL win streak to 11

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Defending champion Tom Kim felt the vibes and found his groove Saturday in Las Vegas with a 9-under 62 that gave him a three-way share of the lead in the Shriners Children’s Open and a chance to win the same tournament twice in one season. It was the second straight year Kim had a 62 in the third round at the TPC Summerlin. It led to a playoff victory over Patrick Cantlay last year in what was the early part of the season. Now it’s technically the same season before the PGA Tour goes back to a calendar year.Adam Hadwin played bogey-free — he had more birdies on the par 3s than the par 5s — for a 63 to catch Kim. Joining them was a late arrival in so many ways — Lanto Griffin, who was tied for the 36-hole lead and didn’t make a birdie until the 13th hole. That was the start of three birdies in a four-hole stretch that led to a 68 and allowed Griffin to share the lead at 15-under 198.This was hardly a three-man race going into the final round.
