Oakland A’s lose third straight to match last season’s 102-loss total

The youthful A’s lost their third straight game on Saturday afternoon and tied last season’s mark with their 102nd loss, falling 5-2 to the San Diego Padres. And while this year’s team still seems likely to end up with the most losses in the franchise’s Oakland history (the current record is 108 losses in 1979), the youth movement continues to build some small hope that things could be different in 2024.Rookie sensation Zack Gelof hit his 12th homer of the season on Saturday, launching a solo shot in the sixth off of Padres starter Matt Waldron, who earned his first career win — and a noteworthy one within the sport, too.Waldron, 26, primarily pitches a knuckleball and earned the win by only allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. He became the first pitcher to use a knuckleball while earning a win in nearly five years (the last knuckleballer to get a win was Steven Wright on Sept. 20, 2018).Waldron’s knuckler wasn’t untouchable, as the A’s batters picked up seven hits off of him. In games like these, youth and inexperience are often referenced as negatives. Grayson Rodriguez and Gunnar Henderson flipped that narrative Saturday night. The Orioles’ two youngest players entered the season among the sport’s best prospects. In the biggest game of their careers, the pair proved that their immense talent matters far more than their lack of experience.Rodriguez masterfully twirled eight scoreless innings, while Henderson hit an early home run to break the offense out of its slump to carry the Orioles to a crucial 8-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. The win ended Baltimore’s four-game losing streak and put the club back in sole possession of first place atop the American League East. With its win and the Texas Rangers’ loss, the Orioles’ magic number to make the playoffs fell to one.If the Orioles (92-56) win Sunday, they will clinch their first playoff berth since 2016.Rodriguez, 23, delivered the best start of his career, scattering jus...Chicago Cubs bullpen takes another blow with Michael Fulmer returning to the injured list

Right-hander Michael Fulmer’s return to the bullpen was short-lived.The Chicago Cubs put Fulmer on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right forearm strain, the same injury that sidelined him two weeks before he was activated Monday. He recorded the save in their 5-4 victory Monday over the Colorado Rockies, however, Fulmer didn’t bounce back well from the outing, which saw a velocity drop against the four batters he faced.Fulmer won’t be eligible to come back until the final day of the regular season. The Cubs recalled right-hander Daniel Palencia, who had been optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Friday for Marcus Stroman.“Just hoping we can calm that thing down and get him rested,” manager David Ross said of Fulmer’s arm. “It’s a tough loss. He’s somebody who’s been really important to our success down there and closed out that game in Colorado for us but wasn’t able to recover as well as he should.
